Gardening - Community Gardens

The Kabin (featured address on map)
Loanhead Community garden is located in the Kabin’s grounds and consists of several areas including a children’s playground, mini orchard, vegetable growing area with composters and a wormery, forest garden with a fire pit, greenhouse and potting area.

The garden is open to the whole community – there are groups throughout the week for people of all ages from ‘parents & tots’ to adult volunteers. There is a weekly supported group for adults with additional support needs.

Vegetables grown in the garden have been donated to the Honeypot cafe in the Kabin and are available to volunteers. The project is happy to be contacted by community projects looking for donations of excess food crops.

Hawthorn Gardens.
The project has transformed an unused, hard surfaced area within a sheltered housing complex into a community garden with raised beds and a greenhouse.

The garden aims to grow fruit and vegetables which will be used in the kitchen with additional planting to benefit biodiversity and the visual apperance of the area. The aim of the project is to reduce health inequalities by encouraging hands-on community involvement by the community. The project is supported by the Edinburgh and Lothian Greenspace Trust who are working with the residents over the growing year to improve knowledge and skills and provide opportunities for sociable activities.
