Art Group (12-18) - Art Therapy
MYPAS supports young people in Midlothian in a variety of ways including offering Art therapy, providing support on issues similar to counselling Alcohol and other drugs, including advice for parents
Art Therapy involves drawing, painting or sculpting in the presence of a therapist. You may be able to express or communicate feelings or thoughts that are difficult to put into words. The art therapist will work with you towards an understanding of issues and feelings that may underlie your current difficulties.
You do not have to be good at art and there is no right or wrong way to make art in therapy. Any mark or form made in art therapy is valued. The process of making art involves making decisions and may help you to become more aware of thoughts and feelings that were otherwise hidden. This process can be as important as the final picture of end result.
For most of us, there are times in our lives when we experience anxiety or distress. Sometimes such worries are due to current circumstances, for example bereavement, problems with relationships, or illness. Current problems may also stir up buried feelings about the past. Art therapy provides a safe, consistent space in which to examine such issues and feelings at your own pace. It is not always an easy process, but it may help you to make discoveries about yourself and enable you to make positive changes in your life.
